Just like translating a text to a different languange, turning a novel into a movie or musical changes something from the book. As everyone knows, example is queen of the damn... in the movie maruis is the one who made lestat which is not true in the book. Maharet has a twin but in the movie she doesnt have one. Take another example, as my memory serves me right Caspain from narnia and susan in the book doesnt have any love interest with each other. But in the movie they had, and i could name a lot more.
Going back to the topic on hand. WICKED... "ARe we all born wicked? or is wickedness thrust upon us?" That is the question in this story both in the musical and novel. The musical diverted from the novel but not too much that the content has changed already. The novel started on the story of the Elphaba's(the wicked witch of the west) parents. Her Father was a figure head in politics and religion in munchkin land, south of Oz. Her mother on the other hand was a house wife who has a thing with strangers. Elphaba is their first daugther whom become a disappointment to her father bec of her odd apperance when she came out. Aside from her green skin she also had sharp teeth which made her father glad when she got her normal human teeth after the sharp one fell out. Before her sister was born a traveler passed by their house once again. Who has been fond with elphaba, who her nanny is thinking is the father of her sister NEssa (this part is not in the musical). Also in the book, nessa is born without arms and could not walk. In the musical Nessa can't work but she has her arms.
Forward to a couple of years, Elphaba is sent to Shiz for education. At first she doesnt want to study sorcery but headmaster of Shiz saw her talents into sorcery and saw the benifit of teaching her for the wizard. So is the song the Wizard and I in the musical. BUT... Elphaba in the novel wasnt much interested in meeting the wizard not until she learned about the oppression of Animals (talking Animals - Think Narnia). Her cause was to fight for the freedom of the Animals. And so as the musical goes Elphaba and Galinda (whome she changed into Glinda eventually) met. Now eventually Elphaba's work in saving the Animal has influenced some of her school mates and one of the is Fiyero. In the musical Fiyero became a love interest with Glinda. In the book Glinda married another man NOT fiyero and Fiyero and Elphaba met a couple of years later after she left Shiz when she visited the Wizard and got disapointed. Elphaba stayed behind in the Emerald City, and didn't go with Glinda back to shiz. It didnt happen the way it happened in the musical. Next part of book goes to where Fiyero met Elphaba and shes planning to assasinate the Headmaster in Shiz who is the grand vizer of the wizard. In that brief meeting thats the time Fiyero and Elphaba had their afair coz Fiyero has a wife back in his kingdom in the western part of Oz which later became Elphaba's castle when his widow and children was kidnapped by the wizard's men and never heared of. Elphaba failed in assasinating the headmistress and when she got back to her place it was all ruined and searched leaving the reader the conclusion that Fiyero was executed. With all things that just happened the death of her sister (well we all knew her death by the house of dorothy) and Fiyero's disapperance (so u see he didn't turnd into the scarecrow as the musical indicated.) and the failed assasination of the headmaster sent Elphaba into emotional unstability and she seeked refuge into the sister convent of glinda. where she gave birth of a boy named Leir and yes Fiyero is the father. This part of the story wasnt told in the musical. After she got herself together and left the convent the sisters told her to bring leir with her. Although she never mentioned to leir that shes his mother Leir also assumed that this Fiyero is his father. When she left the convent she went west to the widowed family of Fiyero and was respectably welcomed by his widow whom also knew that this Elphaba is her husband's mistress and somehow leir is their son. And then the story went to dorothy killing her bec of pouring water on her. Well technically she accidentaly kicked the bucket of water and made her melt.
Now in the musical, The tin man is Boch which is in the book its not. The musical had a clear love story in the novel its more into politics and how people are being branded as wicked or evil if one wants to fight the authoritize... more like freedom fighters and people struggling for freedom. The song "Defying Gravity" is my favorite in the musical coz it showed how Elphaba defyd the governing body of Oz. Other songs i like is "Popualar" which is so true :P in our sociaty. The line that i so long is "U think they got brian for analyzis don't make me laugh they were popular" :p lol yah this is soo true coz people who got the right brains are branded wicked. Its a matter of popularity if u want to climb up the corporate, political or whatever ladder you need to climb up. And the wizard's song titled "Wonderful" the line "No i didnt lie its what we call history." lol this sooo hit the spot for me... hehe..
Reason why i got addicted to the story coz it so reflect the human sociaty. No one is born wicked, its the sociaty and the governing body who thrust people into wickedness. And i soo love the glinda here... she's the perfect example of people who roll over and play dead to the governing body. Like she has no brain or decisions of her own. lol like some people i know in my office... ROFL!!!
